She Looks Bad

On a Saturday, having just completed grand rounds and then service rounds, my fellow ENT intern and I were trying to leave the building to go home.  I got a page and stopped in the old LSU med building to return the page.  My fellow intern stopped with me.  The Nurse paging me simply said, “Dr E you have to come now, Ms. so and so looks bad.”  Before I could ask what that meant, she hung up.

We went back up the ward we had just left to find that Ms. so and so was being coded.  ENT intern intubated her, I put a central line and we performed full ACLS protocol but to no avail.  She died. (Later we learned that she had had a PE.)

whenever a Nurse at charity told you a patient looked bad , you believed them.
