We were rounding on a patient who was POD 1 from a gastrectomy. My chief resident looked at his NG tube and noticed multicolored flecks of shells or something within the NG tube and suction canister. She asked the patient, “have you been eating something?” The patient said:
“Oh yeah, the nurse wouldn’t let me eat so I went down to the snack bar out front and got myself a bag of M&Ms”
